Completed in 1912, the Courthouse was an architectural jewel, incorporating such cutting-edge amenities as air-conditioning and being wired for extensive electric lighting during the initial construction phase. The stained glass dome is approximately 26 feet in diameter.
Jules was hired as the Stained Glass Restoration Consultant/Specialist to assess the dome’s condition and needs, and to provide oversight of the restoration contractor. His personal experience with similar domes was instrumental in facilitating the bidding process and in resolution of unique issues that arose during the restoration process.
Basilica of St. Francis Xavier (“The Old Cathedral”) – Vincennes, Indiana (2014)
This is one of the earliest parishes in the country, pre-dating the American Revolution. The building’s existing stained glass windows were installed in the early 1900s. The Von Gerichten Art Glass Studios, originally based in Munich, Germany and relocated to Columbus, Ohio in 1893, manufactured the 10 large figurative windows, each approximately 6' wide x 14' high.
Jules became familiar with the Cathedral and its stained glass many years before, when he restored one of the large windows. A severely damaged window from an earlier part of the Cathedral’s past was discovered during that time. Jules researched and eventually restored that panel as well. It is displayed in the Cathedral’s museum space. Mominee Studios was selected for the current ongoing restoration by the Cathedral and an independent consultant for the Archdiocese of Indianapolis, based on the Studios’ reputation and demonstrated ability.
First Bank of Carmi, Illinois (2014)
The designer and manufacturer of the dome are unknown. Unsubstantiated claims attribute the dome to being one of four stained glass domes built as part of the 1904 World’s Fair held in St. Louis, Missouri. The dome was purported to have been purchased and relocated to Carmi in 1908. At approximately 14' wide x 21' long x 5' high, it is thought to be the largest stained glass dome in private ownership in the Southern Illinois/Southern Indiana region. Overall, the design of the dome is one of transition from Victorian/Empire to Art Nouveau. The presence of a structural crown with banding is atypical for domes of this vintage and region.
Based on his reputation for quality restoration work and overall knowledge of stained glass, Jules was hired to examine and create a report on the dome’s condition. Some months later, at the recommendation of the bank’s architectural consultants, Mominee Studios was hired to perform the restoration.
These and the following examples represent a small portion of the work Jules and the staff of Mominee Studios have done over the years.
